Many older children have books they no longer read or need. These unwanted books would be a much appreciated gift to children in homeless shelters, pre-school and after-school childcare programs that have few or no books for their children.
Get Started
Make a phone call to a program you think might need books.
Start by saying “Hi my name is ________. Some friends and I would like to organize a book drive. Would you be interested in accepting donated books?”
The most successful way to improve reading in young children is to give them access reading material including books, magazines and newspapers.
Identify local Partners
Contact your local library to see if there is an existing program. They might be willing to be a place where books could be dropped off.
Make a list of local youth programs that want books.
