Just Plain Weird

Frozen Houses

Most of us consider a beach cottage on the edge of a lake to be extremely desirable. But maybe we should think again.

Hoover Beach, Hamburg, N.Y. on the shores of Lake Erie, experienced gale-force winds of up to 60 mph on February 29. Most years, the edge of the lake would be frozen over during the winter months. But this was not the case this year. And when the wind started to blow, waves of 15 feet or more blew shore sending freezing spray over the beach cottages on the south shore.

None of the locals had seen anything like this. The houses were literally coated with ice—in some place three feet thick.
