SearchSpielstadt or “Mini-Munich” is a fully functioning city developed by artists and educators, with businesses and public facilities, a theater, university, town hall, garbage disposal and much more and made especially for students between the ages of 7 and 15. It takes place in Munich, Germany over the course of three summer weeks.
This year, because of the coronavirus, the venue is spread out over 40 venues with a limitation of 1,000 students.
Spielstadt means “play city” but the many students who participate, take their roles very seriously. Jobs are given out each morning and can range from running a laundry and making mailboxes, to administering law, taxes and creating a local economy. Each business must submit a funding request and set taxes. There’s even a stock market and a web application that broadcasts each day’s news.
The overall aim is to promote tolerance and provide students with a sense of community. This extremely popular event has taken place every two years since 2018.
