Musical News
Pick a story featured in the newspaper. Read the story to your class and then discuss how this could be turned into a musical. Divide the class into groups and have each group compose the words to a song or poem that goes with their part of the story.

Green Search
Look through the newspaper for anything green. How many things can you find in one minute? Work with a partner to see who finds the most in a minute.

Behind the Success
Using the newspaper, have students select an article about a person they believe is successful. It might be an athlete, actor, business person or community volunteer. Have students write the person’s name and the success for which he or she is recognized. Then have them list the things they think that person had to do to reach this moment of success.

Find a Gift
Tell students to look through the newspaper to find a gift for a friend. First let them pretend they have $500. They must work out the tax they would have to pay and the amount of change left. Then let them choose a gift for $20, also noting tax and change. Discuss how the money available affected their choices.

Wants and Needs
Have students make a list of their wants (such as Ipods, movies, games). Ask them to find ads in the newspaper and create a collage of their WANTS. Now have them make a list of needs (such as food, transportation, shelter) and make a collage of NEEDS. Discuss the costs and benefits of meeting their wants and needs.

Natural News
Ask each student to first find an article in the newspaper about the environment and then write a summary of the article. Discuss with your class why the environment is an important issue both locally and nationally. Discuss what other environmental topics you would like your newspaper to address.

Nature in Turmoil
Have a panel discussion on the natural hazards that make the news during summer months—wildfires, tornadoes and earthquakes. Discuss the way the news is reported, the disasters’ effects on people and places and the role the newspaper plays in reporting both the story and the follow-up.

Recycling
Have students look through the newspaper for items that can be recycled. List the items, and find out how each one can be recycled in your community. Remind students that newsprint is a handy material, and encourage them to come up with new and creative uses for their newspapers (e.g., wrapping paper, origami paper, paper mache).
