Happy/Sad
Have each student look through the newspaper for a photo of a person whose facial expression conveys emotion. Ask the students how they think the person in the photo is feeling. List the words they respond with. Are the photo subjects scared, curious, despairing, angry, joyful, suspicious? What else? Finally, have each student draw a cartoon character with a facial expression that depicts an emotion.

Successful Teams
Have students look through the sports section to discover what makes a successful team. Discuss the roles of the coach and support people. What elements are required of a team? Consider defense and attack, as well as fitness, sportsmanship and cooperation. Ask your students to choose a sport and then, reminding them to think carefully about their discussion, have them list their ideal team.

Colorful Celebration
Have your students look through the newspaper for references to Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Ask them to list the adjectives used in the articles. Can they demonstrate how they would use colorful adjectives to advertise a different celebration?

Imported Goods
Clip three pictures of items in the newspaper. Divide students into groups and have them research whether an item was imported or exported. Let them look for the component parts; Are these available in the USA, and if not, why not? Where might the parts be manufactured? Which country was the exporter?

Finding Science
Find an article in the newspaper that describes a scientific event or breakthrough. In small groups, have your students write and present a short play or song depicting their interpretation of the breakthrough.
