Common Ground
Finding ways that groups of people are the same often helps in finding resolution to conflicts. Find an example of a conflict in the newspaper. Make a list of ways the people on both sides of the conflict are the same. How could these similarities help them resolve their conflict?

Use red to underline WHAT happened. Use blue to underline WHERE the event took place. Use orange to underline WHEN it happened. Use black to draw a circle around the sentences that explain WHY or HOW the news story happened.

Our bodies help us keep cool by sweating or perspiring. Look through the newspaper for activities that make people perspire. Cut them out and paste them on a piece of paper. Look through the newspaper for ways to keep cool other than perspiring. Cut these out and paste them next to your activities.

Name Power
Look through the advertising section of the newspaper to find as many names of cars as you can. Cut them out. Look in a dictionary or encyclopedia to see what each name means. Draw or paste a picture beside each car name to show what you have found. Why do you think manufacturers chose those names?
