Graph Groups
Skim the newspaper and cut out any graphs you can find. Paste them on a piece of paper. What types of information are being given? Are certain types of graphs easier to read than others? Make a list of the different parts of the newspaper. Survey students to see what sections they read regularly. Make a graph of your results.

Similes
A simile is a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as. (She was as pale as a ghost.) See how many similes you can find in the sports or comics sections of the newspaper. Write your own similes to describe news pictures in the paper.

Figuring Rates
Turn to the classified ads. Find the rate schedule and determine the price for one line in the classified section. Find a three line ad and determine how much it costs. Write an ad of your own to sell your teacher or parent. Do not write more than six words on each line. How much would your ad cost?

Getting Your Word's Worth
Write the alphabet on a piece of paper. Above each letter write a number so that a=1 b=2 c=3 and so on. This is your decoder. Choose ten words from the paper. Use your decoder to add up the value of the letters in your words. Which word is worth the most? Which word is worth the least? Can you find a headline worth 1000?
