Saving Space
Classified ads have lots of abbreviations. Look in the real estate column and circle all of the abbreviations. Make a list (in alphabetical order) of all the abbreviations and their meanings. Example: House Hse.

Our bodies help us keep cool by sweating or perspiring. Look through the newspaper for activities that make people perspire. Cut them out and paste them on a piece of paper. Look through the newspaper for ways to keep cool other than perspiring. Cut these out and paste them next to your activities.

Getting It Together
How good are you at putting things back together? Test your skills on today's comics. Find three story strips. Don't read them. Cut them apart and mix up the panels. Now read the dialogue and put the strips together the way they should go. Check your work in another paper.

When you read a newspaper or a magazine you will often find references to a reliable source. That means a reporter got his or her information from someone who did not want to be identified. Find an example of a reliable source in a news story. How do you feel about the story? Find other stories where sources are named. Is one source more believable than another? Why or why not?
