Just Plain Weird

37 Years at Sea

Ocean currents can be quite remarkable. A recent news story tells of a message in a bottle put in the ocean 37 years ago, that turned up this year on a Hawaiian beach.

In 1984, students from the natural science club at Choshi High School, close to the east coast of Japan, placed bottles in the ocean in order to learn about ocean currents. The bottles held contact forms written in Japanese, English and Portuguese asking the finder to reach out with their location information for the club and the school.

Abbie Graham, a nine-year-old, found the bottle this year on a beach in the big island on Hawai’i. She filled out the forms as instructed and returned them to Choshi High School. They were thrilled to hear of their project, 37 years after the event.
