Bees Hitching a Ride

Can you imagine dropping into the supermarket for 10 minutes and coming back to your car to find that 15,000 bees had taken up residence?

Now is the time of year when bees swarm—looking for a new home to establish a hive with a queen bee.

A shopper in Las Cruces, New Mexico, stopped off at his local supermarket and left the rear window of his car open. He even started driving away before he noticed something wrong in the back.

He called 911 and luckily, one of the members of Las Cruces Fire Department was also a part-time beekeeper. Jesse Johnson was able to arrive at the scene in full beekeeper gear and with the equipment to remove the bees. He used lemongrass oil to entice the bees out of the car and into a box and then was able to relocate the swarm on his own property outside the city.

He told a New York Times reporter, “I’ll do anything to keep people from killing bees.”
