On your next trip to New Zealand’s North Island, take in a boat ride through the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. The caves are home to a species of glowworm only found here.
Cave formations also reveal stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. Tours of the caves take you through various limestone levels including the Catacombs, Banquet Chamber and the Cathedral and the tour end with the boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto along the underground Waitomo River where the light is provided by the glowworms alone.
The caves are constantly monitored by a Scientific Advisory Group to maintain air quality and carbon dioxide levels and on occasions, the carbon monoxide levels require the caves to be evacuated.
