Not just plain weird but more like just plain freaky. Beekeepers in Washington State have recently reported sightings of the Asian Giant Hornet, more commonly known by its nickname, the Murder Hornet.
This enormous wasp is about the size of an adult’s thumb. According to livescience.com, it’s wingspan is about three inches and it stinger, which is huge and curved is about two inches. It’s head is orange as are the stripes on its back. It is the largest hornet in the world.
It can sting multiple times before it will die and humans in Japan who have experienced the sting describe it as being “like hot metal being injected into your body.” It has caused deaths in Japan.
This monster wasp attacks honeybees by ripping off their heads and eating their bodies. However, Japanese honeybees have learned to defend their hives by surrounding and trapping the Murder Hornet and vibrating their wings to increase the temperature—they can stand this increase but the intruder cannot and will die.
More good news—in some remote parts of Japan—the Murder Hornets are considered a delicacy when they are deep fried and eaten. Bon Appetit!
