Just Plain Weird

The Kraken?

the-krakenImagine fishing the Ross Sea in Antarctica for Chilean Seabass and you pull up the nets to discover a 770 lb (350 kg) squid as big as a minivan. That’s what happened to John Bennett and his crew aboard their New Zealand toothfish boat, San Aspiring.

They knew this was a fantastic find and were able to keep the squid frozen and 8 months later, deliver it to squid scientist, Kat Bolstad of the Auckland University of Technology.

The rare specimen was defrosted and scientists are now in the process of making a thorough examination they describe as a “spectacular opportunity.”

Could these huge squid be the kraken of folklore? They are rarely seen as they live deep in the cold oceans around Antarctica and this is an extraordinary chance to discover the creature’s secrets.
