For each Pine Cone Bird Feeder you will need:

  • A large, open pine cone
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, lard or suet
  • 2 1/2 cups oats or corn meal or bird seed
  • A few feet of string

Food mixture: Mix vegetable shortening, lard or suet with cornmeal or uncooked oats until well blended. Optional: add dried fruit (chopped up), chopped nuts, seeds (especially sunflower and millet), and/or suet, which are high-energy bird foods.

Additional version: roll a pinecone in creamy peanut butter, then roll to coat with birdseed.

  1. Tie a few feet of string to a pinecone.
  2. Cover the pinecone with the mixture.
  3. Roll the pinecone in birdseed.
  4. Suspend it from a tree branch outside.
